How to deal with a sticky curling iron?

I'm in a lot of plays and I have to use an unbelievable amount of hairspray to get my super stick straight hair to do anything. So whenever I'm getting ready for a show, the curling iron is always covered in goop by the time I'm about half way through. Does anyone have any tips for dealing with a sticky curling iron?
