I'm French, and to answer your question, if people see that you're making an effort, then they'll do the same and help you out. There are all kinds of people in France just like in any other countries. The thing with Americans visiting France is that some of them come to France expecting the French to speak english to them and are very arrogant, it's with these people that the French have tendency to be rude...
